In my years as a wedding photographer, I’ve photographed all kinds of weddings. Really! All kinds. Destination weddings, church weddings, temple weddings, Hindu weddings, Chinese weddings, and more and more. Being a San Francisco-based wedding and destination photographer has allowed me to be a part of a rich variety of weddings.
It goes without saying that I’m very visual so I’m looking at everything that will be in every frame that I shoot. I’ve learned a great deal about what contributes to great wedding photos, other than a great photographer, of course!
You’ll be paying attention to the bride’s gown and the groom’s attire. Color doesn’t usually play a huge part in those choices. A white gown and a dark suit show up often because they simply look great together. The contrast works brilliantly.
But nearly everything else that will appear as part of your wedding is really important. Color and design create the ambience for your wedding and the setting for your photos.
I can’t say enough about what a huge help a wedding planner, sometimes called a wedding coordinator, is in helping you to get just the right look and feel for your wedding—and for your photos. The planner not only puts all of the components together—food, music, cake, table setting, and so on, he or she will help you to find a theme for your wedding and then design around that. Your theme is the starting point.
It’s so important to find a wedding planner with whom you feel really comfortable. Make sure that the planner is going to listen to you and your wants. You need to be able to say what you like and what you don’t like and know that he or she will really listen. He or she will be doing the planning but the wedding theme and design will still be yours. When the planner shows you an array of something, say centerpieces, to choose from, it’s your ideas and the personal choices you make that will create a wedding that demonstrates who you are.
Please use lots of color! And don’t be afraid to innovate. Feel free to do something out of the ordinary. It’s okay to be non-traditional. Infuse your wedding design and décor with a sense of who you are. By all means, avoid a cookie cutter wedding.
Glamorous, rustic, eclectic, fairy tale, formal, informal, elegant, minimalist, barn, beach…let your imagination go wild.
This is one of the few times in your life where all of the people nearest and dearest to you will be gathered in one place. Use this opportunity to announce who you are as a couple. Let the wedding celebrate you as a brand new couple and the meaning of your unique relationship. There is only one couple just like you: you! This is the place to celebrate what you mean to each other and for everyone to meet the brand new couple. Your décor will set the scene.
Great wedding design can create excitement, happiness, and a new experience for your guests. The lift that good design can add will help you prevent boring, lifeless photos. Create a space that feels just right for you and you and your guests will glow in the photos.
Take the chance and make your wedding truly memorable. Go all out with color and design and the result will be fantastic wedding as well as wonderful memories and stunning photos that you’ll cherish for years to come.
